Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my home studio (Aka my living room)

Time

This was taken around 6pm

Lighting

Lighting was an xplor 600 with a magnum reflector camera left. I added a black fill card to kill the shadows on camera right.

Equipment

Nikon d500, sigma 18-35 1.8, flashpoint xplor 600, magnum reflector, c stand, tripod, SnapBridge on my iPhone, and a black fill card.

Inspiration

I wanted to practice some 1 light techniques, but no one was home to model for me. I decided to make myself a new profile photo.

Editing

Yes. I converted to black and white using a b/w adjustment layer in photoshop, added a bit of clarity, used frequency separation to get the skin how I wanted, and used some local/global dodge and burn.

In my camera bag

D500, sigma 105 1.4 art, sigma 18-35 1.8 art, Nikon 50 1.8, xplor 600, 2 speedlights, softbox, 2 strip boxes, color checker passport, a few stands.

Feedback

Learn lighting inside and out. Great lighting is crucial to getting great images. Don’t be afraid to try new editing techniques. Play around in photoshop and Lightroom to come up with unique editing styles.
