Location
This photo was taken in Sun Valley California at the iconic Pink Motel. I'm just an amateur photographer that's been able to shoot at some cool locations.Time
It was at the end of a long day shooting different looks and outfits. The sun was starting to hit the horizon and it began to create a beautiful glow on the grungy poolside, so I grabbed the model and headed to the pool. The rest was history... Took this on 9/7/17 at 6:49pmLighting
Most photographers already know this but the golden hour is the best time to shoot. You can get some incredible shots during this time. Here, I wanted to see movement with the sun as the rim light. I purposely shot into the sun to get the lens flare while positioning her to the right of the image. She started to shake her head and the glowing hair was amazing!Equipment
This was handled taken with a Canon 5D Mark IV. I was using a Canon EF lens (50mm f/1.2L USM) 1/200 at f/3.5 ISO 100. There was also a little bounce light from white foam core off to the right.Inspiration
The inspiration was a trifecta of things happening, location, sun and the model. The hotel is kind of an iconic location. Lots of big movies and photoshoots have been shot there. Next you have the golden hour, you can't go wrong with that. Then there's the model... She has this beautiful porcelain looking skin and light brown hair that glowed with the sun. She was already a skateboarder, so it was just natural for her being in and around the skate pool. She was really fun to work with. We played a lot with movement and angles. I think this shot turned out great.Editing
The location already gave the story/theme. The color was adjusted to give it an old school skater look. A little washed out and toned down colors or a grungy look if you will. The color edits were all done in Lightroom. The whites are pulled all the way back, lighted the blacks, a little curve adjustment and some color shifts in the HSL panel. In my camera bag
The equipment I carry is all based on what I'm shooting. For a shoot like this I had a Canon 5D Mark IV, 50mm f/1.2, 24-70mm f2/8 and a 70-200mm f/2.8. I also used reflectors to help bounce light back onto the the model or to create shade. It all depended on where I placed them. I also have a wide angle lens, some prime lenses to choose from, lights for studio or outdoor shoots and several tripods I mostly use for landscape.Feedback
First thing would be, shoot during sunset. Use the sun as a rim light, so shoot towards the sun. Play with movement or maybe props in your photos. If you can, use a reflector to help bounce the light back onto your model. It will make a big difference and just keep practicing!
