Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this image in the Columbia River Gorge, just outside a small town along the river.

Time

It was just at sunset, so about 5 in the afternoon. I had just finished a holiday festival (where I was selling my photography prints) and noticed the clouds lining up for a potentially colorful sunset. I rushed through my breakdown and pack up, grabbed my camera and ran down to the shore, checking a half dozen spots for composition and finally settling on this one as the color started glowing and reflecting in the water.

Lighting

It was a cold day with off and on rain and snow showers, the sun trying to peak through when it could.

Equipment

For this shot, I used my Nikon D500 with Tokina wide angle lens, a tiny travel tripod, and I believe I had just gotten my Lee ND filters.

Inspiration

The movement of the clouds was the inspiration, I couldn't resist at least setting up and trying to capture what color would be in the sunset.

Editing

I didn't do a lot of processing for this photo. It was a single image that needed some sharpening, adjusting of color temperature, shadows, and highlights. I like to keep as much work in the camera as possible when possible.

In my camera bag

I normally have my D500, a 11-16mm lens, 40mm, and 85mm. Plus various ND and polarizing filters, remotes, and on occasion a flash. Oh, and I never go anywhere without extra batteries and memory cards!

Feedback

Always have your camera with you as you never know when the shot will line up! That's my favorite thing about photography, no matter how long you do it, the magic of finding the next shot is always possible.
