Behind The Lens

Location

Of all places, I took this photo in my bathroom! I was testing out a new macro lens and ring light. I used the bathroom mirror and live view on my camera to help line up the frame so it was filled with just my eye and took a few frames before I got the focus and light reflection just right.

Time

Hmmm, I believe it was early afternoon, maybe 1pm?

Lighting

My bathroom had soft and super warm lighting, but the new ring light was bright and much cooler, so the combination created a really neat effect.

Equipment

This was in my early days of photography with my Nikon D3100, a 40mm macro lens, and small macro ring light(it fit just around the macro lens and created the dotted reflection in my eye).

Inspiration

Mostly I wanted to test out the new ring light and see what kind of macro images it would be best suited for. I had also captured plant life, pets, and a few other subjects that day.

Editing

I always do some amount of post processing, for this image I sharpened, adjusted shadows and highlights, and tweaked the colors just a bit so the blue eyeliner and pink mascara had correct and vibrant hues.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I normally have my Nikon D500, that same 40mm lens, 85mm lens, and 11-16mm wide angle. Plus a few Lee filters, ND filters, remote, tripod, and extra batteries and sd cards.

Feedback

New equipment is a great time to experiment! Fire away at whatever you think will or won't work for an image (figuring out was doesn't work for you really helps to find what does).
