I took this photo on December 24 at the Catskill Center's Thorn Preserve, 60 acres of open space near Woodstock, in Ulster County, New York.Time
This is really one of my favorite images. I got up shortly after dawn and walked around the area where I live taking photos. Walking out onto the grassy area, I saw the pond, the tree and the Shawangunks in the distant. I just knew, with the clouds overhead, this would make a great photo.Lighting
The lighting was near perfect: just enough sun, just enough shadows from the clouds made the photo dramatic.Equipment
Nikon D3100 F29 1/500 31mm Nikkor AF-S 55-200mm Lens, Shot this photo hand heldInspiration
I am always looking for places to shoot around the area where I live and I love the Thorn Preserve. Sweeping grassland habitat, riparian forest and ponds make for great photos. Mowed walking paths make it easy to get around and I decided Christmas Eve day would be a good day to walk down there. I was right and, as stated, the lighting was perfect. It spoke to me and I am glad I listened.Editing
Other than some minor adjusting on my computer, I don't do any post-processing. No Photoshop or any other programs of the sort. WISIWYG: What I See Is What You GetIn my camera bag
I always have my Nikon camera with me; while this photo was taken with a D3100, I now use a D3200. I also have my Nikkor AF-S 55-200mm Lens. Depending where I am going, I either have my heavy Star D tripod, or a lighweight tripod. I also have my Ricoh XR7 film camera with a Sakar 135mm lens because, as much as I love digital photography, I also still love my film cameras.Feedback
When a place speaks to you, listen and take a shot. One of my mentors once said, "Ready, Shoot, Aim." Some of my best photos have been taken when a place spoke to me and I stopped, grabbed my camera and quickly shot the scene without too much thinking.
