Behind The Lens

Location

This is a picture of the Duomo, the cathedral of Milan. It's located in a big square in the very city centre, and is a main point of interest for many tourists.

Time

It was short after dusk of a winter day, and the blue hour was starting. It's a good situation to shot beautiful pictures.

Lighting

I was looking at the Duomo, and saw that the contrast between its illuminated façade and the statue in the dark was nice. So i took my compact camera and shot this picture.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a small sensor compact camera, a Casio Exilim ZR3000. It's an unusual camera because it was never sold here in Italy. I was just curious about some of this camera features (for example HDR) and bought it from a japanese seller on Ebay. For this picture, it was not necessary to use a tripod because the camera was good enough in low light.

Inspiration

The historical buildings, like the Duomo, are always interesting. They have beautiful façades, rich of details and you can find many ideas for a photo. I had already shot this subject in the past, usually with a wideangle lens and nearer. But this time i decided to shot from a distance, zooming in at the equivalent focal length of about 100mm, and the compression effect of the telephoto add a nicer effect. Another source of inspiration was obviously the colour of the sky, that adds a fine touch.

Editing

I shot jpeg, so i only adjusted very little the highlights and the shadows.

In my camera bag

I had some digital and analogue cameras, and i like to exchange between them. So it's a difficult question to answer.

Feedback

I you like bluehour pictures, try to shot in the winter season. In this period of the year, dusk comes early and you can easily be out when the sky becomes blue.
