I took this photo at the B. Bryan Preserve in Point Arena, California. This was one of my first "wildlife" photographs, I say "wildlife" because this is at a preserve, I didn't exactly see these beautiful creatures in the wild. The B. Bryan Preserve is a private preserve actively committed to the breeding and preservation of African hoof Stock. Their various species of zebra, giraffe, and antelope range from critically endangered to endangered, and range in large, open fields on this amazing property in Point Arena, California. It was a special experience for sure.Time
Point Arena, California is right on the ocean so it was brisk to say the very least. This photograph was taken around 9:30 AM, the lighting was pretty ideal considering it was November and the sun was shining.Lighting
Since this was one of my first photographs of this kind of animal, I really think I got lucky with the way the light was hitting these zebras as they came in for a feeding.Equipment
This photograph was shot with a Nikon D3400 using a AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED lens, handheld, no flash or anything.Inspiration
I was inspired to take more interesting pictures than flowers or bugs in my garden. I booked this day trip for my family to go to the B. Bryan Preserve as we spend a lot of time at the Mendocino coast, this was meant to be because it actually inspired a complete change in my course as a wildlife photographer. After this trip I ended up buying a Sigma 150-600mm lens and started spending time at the Point Reyes National Seashore which is a magical land filled with wildlife. I was very surprised to see how many people were inspired by this particular photograph of the Hartmann's Zebras!Editing
I used Lightroom to edit, but there was very little to do on that end for this particular photograph. In my camera bag
#1 is an extra CHARGED battery, along with an extra SD card. I now use a Nikon D850 and primarily shoot with my Sigma 150-600mm lens and I carry my equipment in a Revelry Supply Scout Series Hard Case, one of the best cases on the market!Feedback
Go explore and see what you find! You never know what you might find on a simple outing, but I highly recommend a visit to this location at the B. Bryan Preserve, it's an amazing gem in the middle of Highway 1 on the California coastline!
