This shot is one of many similar ones I took on several walks along the Regents Canal in London at various times of the year. It is a photographer's paradise as there is always something new to capture.Time
This was deliberately taken on an autumn evening just around the Golden Hour when there are not so many cyclists and most people had already arrived home.Lighting
It was all natural lighting with a lovely, soft golden, sun behind the trees on the left. I took around 10 shots to make sure I got at least one as I wanted it to be. I particularly wanted to capture the colour of autumn leaves which was emphasised by the setting sun.Equipment
I used a Manfrotto tripod with my Nikon D7200, a Nikkor 18-105 lens with a PL filter attached.Inspiration
I had walked the canal for miles all afternoon spotting for the best viewpoint and angle. This was one of them that I went back to and I stood on the bridge looking along the canal. It seemed perfect so I set up my camera and waited until the clouds were in the right position and checked the light was still good, then took around ten shots which looked fine on live view. Very happy with the result.Editing
I did not have to do much post-processing, just took the highlights down a little and added some vibrance. I also increased the hue in the blue of the sky and the reflection. In my camera bag
I now carry two cameras, a Nikon D7200 and a Panasonic TZ90. The Panasonic is an excellent little camera and very handy as it just fits in my jacket pocket - great for impulse shots. In my bag I take two or three lenses depending on what I am expecting to shoot. Usually I have 18-105mm on the camera and in the bag a Nikkor 55-300mm and a Nikkor 35mm. I also carry the usual stuff such as lens cleaning brush, remote shutter release, spare batteries, and a few ND filters.Feedback
As photography goes this is a fairly easy shot to take as long as you are aware of the basic rules of composition and the rule of thirds. In landscape and portrait photography, the more time you take to make sure everything is covered the better as my worst shots have always been when I was rushed.. I have for some time now been a believer in the histogram as the main guide in setting my exposure and using manual mode (after much trial and error) most of the time. The time spent in learning all you can about your camera is well spent and mastering manual mode is the icing on the cake.
