I took this photo in the Ballyhoura Mountain range, in Co Limerick.Time
This was in the evening, approx 6pm. It had been a very wet miserable day and i knew the waterfall would have some decent flow in it! It was a short drive from where i live so i decided to take the chance and check it out as it had been quite dry all summerLighting
Due to the thick cloud in the sky the light was perfect and soft for this shot. Cloud acts as a diffuser for light and softens it making for nice lighting in shots like thisEquipment
I used an Olympus Em1 Mk2 camera with the mzuiko 12-40 F2.8 pro lens and a polariser. As the light was fading i did not need an ND filter and i often only use a shutter speed of 1-2 seconds to retain detail in the water. I had my manfrotto 190 Go! tripod on board too.Inspiration
I grew up near this area and visited this waterfall many times in my life, however this was my first visit to it after i discovered my love of photography so i wanted to put my own twist on the shot and see what i could do!Editing
I added some bright orton around the trees above the waterfall to bring out the autumn color. I also de-saturated much of the water to take the brown hue out of it and add some contrast. I added a strong vignette to the image in order to frame it and draw the eye to the waterfall. In my camera bag
I generally carry my 12-40 lens along with a 40-150 telephoto. My Em1 Mk2 and Em1 camera bodies along with a 4 and 6 stop Hoya ND filter, Hoya polariser, Dji mavic pro drone and samsung galaxy s7!Feedback
Use a polariser. It takes the glare off, adds nice tones and contrast and really helps bring the image to life. spend time in post processing, This is where the shot came alive. Set the tripod down low to gain a different perspective and add some depth to your shots. Pick out a focal point and make that the centre piece of the image. Enjoy !
