Elephants can go up to four days without water, but better to have it, right? They can smell water from 5 km and can drink about 200 litres of water a day. A “dry” riverbed doesn’t fool them if they smell water, so they use their powerful trunks to dig through the sand to water. Then they use their trunks to suck up the water and drop it in their mouths.

I was thrilled to see a large herd doing this. The babies, of course, have to be taught by the others and, as you can see in this photograph, sometimes used Mama’s already drilled holes. Which were awfully deep for their baby trunks. See this baby kneeling to make the most of its trunk.
