We're only a few hundred feet and rising to about 1000 feet above the ground. Just me and the pilot of the ultralight aircraft. No room for anybody else. Nothing between us and the ground except air and that little tiny open frame. Oh, and there's a motor somewhere. Those are my feet on the right.

Location
I took this photo at about 500 feet in the air while in? on? an ultralight aircraft. The aircraft basically is a motor with wings and a seat for two, along with some instruments, controls, and stick. There's nothing between you and the ground but air. My friend owns the ultralight and loves to take people up in it, especially if they love it like I do! We travel over the gently rolling farmlands of Clarion County, Pennsylvania, usually at an altitude of about 1000 feet. On this flight, we took off on a dirt road and landed on a grass strip. I have pictures from getting on the aircraft, throughout the taxi, takeoff, flight, and landing.Time
It was the Golden Hour of sunset as you can tell from the picture. Around sunset and sunrise is the best time of day to fly the ultralight because winds and thermals are less likely to be a disturbance.Lighting
We took off about just before sunset during the Golden Hour and landed in the Blue Hour. Perfect! Dare to shoot into the sun and worry about fixing it later. It's hard to avoid. Take advantage of that golden glow. Underexpose by a couple of steps to keep the sun from blowing out your photos.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D Mark III with the Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM AF Lens. I used the hood that came with the lens because of the almost horizontal direction of the sunlight. The hood also helped to protect the lens since there was a good bit of wind and I was turning here and there and in danger of knocking my lens against part of the plane. No other equipment was involved.Inspiration
I would NEVER have left the ground without the best camera and lens in my inventory! How many chances does a person have to take unlimited, unimpeded photos from the sky? I took over 200 pictures in 45 minutes.Editing
I brought the RAW image into Photoshop through Adobe Camera Raw and made some adjustments there increasing exposure, decreasing highlights almost all the way down to dampen that bright sun shining right into the lens (I had stopped down -3 so that helped the sun's appearance out of the camera), lightening shadows, deepening black a bit, increasing clarity and vibrance. This photo came out pretty sharp considering the little ultralight being bounced around. I was shooting at 1/400 so that helped. It was Golden Hour so the light was perfect. I used Topaz Labs Denoise lightly and Perfect Effects 8 to give it a bit of HDR appearance. But really the shadows and golden lighting gave me about all the help I needed and seriously limited the post-processing I had to do. And of course that wonderful camera and lens.In my camera bag
This is a list if I carry everything to be ready for anything. If I'm hauling my Lowepro PRO Roller x200 case, it'll have my Canon 5D Mark III DSLR, Canon 60D DSLR, and Canon G15 point and shoot. As for lenses, there'll be my workhorse lens, the Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM AF Lens. Also I'll have the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Standard Zoom Lens, Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM 1-to-1 Macro Lens, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens. Separate from the case will be my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens (it has its own carrying case and won't fit in the roller bag). There will be hoods for each lens. I'll have good UV filters on each lens and a Nikon polarizing filter for each lens. I carry separately 4 tripods: Manfrotto Pro 055XPROB Tripod (Black) Outfit with 804RC2 Pan Tilt Head, Dolica 62 inch Proline Aluminum Alloy Tripod and Ball Head, a small very lightweight, the Kalimar 960 Telescoping/Camera Tripod Compact/Lightweight, and a small 5" flexible tripod for the G15. I'll also have the support equipment: cleaning cloths, blower, lens cleanser, remote controls for both cameras, chargers, extra batteries, extra tripod mounts, manuals, guides, lots of SD and CF cards, and maybe a small laptop. If I know exactly what I'm shooting, I can pare this down into one of two shoulder bags of only the necessary equipment for that shoot.Feedback
Best advice? Have a friend who loves to take you up in his ultralight for free! Next best? Ask all the right questions and get recommendations from people you trust and buy a ride or two on one. It's a terrific rush but also a terrific way to get some shots most people will never have! Go near sunset or sunrise to get that lovely golden light. Take your best camera and lens - hang it around your neck and don't worry about dropping it. You won't. Relax, enjoy, take pictures constantly.
