It had come to my attention that I have not uploaded a photo here for over a year. Now I will admit I have had quite the writers block this year. But nevertheless.
On a night filled with lightening and thunder, I tried to get that perfect lightening strike. And while I did get a few, I found this one particularly interesting. The setting light on the horizon is actually a lightning strike in a pitch black sky. The thing I find interesting is the middle part of the photo takes on an almost black and white feature. That is representative of the white light coming off the sky.

Location
I took this photo along the beaches of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba Canada.Time
It was Summer so I would say around midnight, or 1 am.Lighting
The lighting is the most interesting part of this photo to me. I went out in a lightning storm to try and get a unique lightning shot. But instead I tried something a little different. Taking a longer exposure of the initial blast. I ended up with an interesting black and white effect in the centre of the frame. Almost ethereal, I decided that was the one to keep. Almost recreating a sunset with a lightning bolt.Equipment
I used a Sony A7-2. My Zeiss 15mm and my trusted 3 legged thing tripod.Inspiration
There are more than enough lightning shots out there. And they are amazing don't get me wrong! And difficult to pull off effectively. That's why I thought I would take a different approach. And preparing to change it up is key. Otherwise you fall into the same old traps and the same old photos.Editing
Yes. It was very dark so I had to bring up some of the shadows. Only nearest to the centre so I could keep my focus on the light. I shoot in raw so sharpening and colour correction is a must.In my camera bag
Always my Sony. Now an A7-3, a Sony 16-35mm and a Sony telephoto 70-200mm. Tripod, remote trigger, lens cleaner, and extra batteries. Travel light and often!Feedback
Stay up late... In the Summer it's easy especially on warm nights. Always plan your trips, time of day, location. Let people know where you'll be going (a must if you're married!). And don't take it so seriously... Seriously.
