Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken at a local nature reserve called Bidjigal Reserve, located in Sydney Australia.Time
I took this particular photo during a mid morning walk, the subject was found on the trunk of a eucalyptus tree.Lighting
For this shot I used my twin flash macro rig. To achieve the desired effect I use home made flash diffusers, this provides a nice even light source.Equipment
This shot was taken hand held, although I was leaning on the tree trunk for stability. For this shot I used a Nikon D5000, with a 18-55mm kit lens mounted on a set of kenko extension tubes. As I mentioned before I used a twin flash lighting rig (cheap import).Inspiration
I love taking close up shots, as I enjoy seeing the hidden details our eyes can not see. I also love nature, spiders in particular. Spiders in general are misunderstood, people fear them thinking they are deadly. Statistically you are more likely to die falling out of bed, than to a spider bite. With my photography I try to get my audience to think differently about spiders, hence this extreme close up portrait. How can you not love those eyes.Editing
I did a couple of basic photoshop tweaks (adjusted brightness and contrast) rotated and cropped image for composition and watermarked it.In my camera bag
2 x D7100 Kenko extension tubes, two speed lights, 18-55mm & 55-200mm kit lenses, tamron 70-300mm, Nikon 50mm f1.8, wireless triggers and flash controllers.Feedback
Keep trying. Don't be afraid to break the rules. For me the most important thing in macro photography is not the lens, it is the light. Flashes are my most powerful tool. For more tips and advice on macro photography send me a message.
