This is taken in an alleyway in Petaluma, California.Time
This is at night.Lighting
I asked my friend, Zac, who has some amazing tattoos if he wanted to try a quick photo shoot and he was highly enthusiastic and cooperative. We found an alleyway with little traffic and spend about half an hour trying out different angles and lights. I found that the autofocus systems needs at least a little light in order to set focus before the flash. Good to know.Equipment
I used a Sony A7RII with a 55mm f/1.8, and a Godox TT600s speedlight with an Fstoppers Flash Disc to soften the light a bit.Inspiration
My friend Zac has some great hand tattoos, and I just wanted to experiment and find an appealing way to feature them.Editing
Not much post processing, other than in Lightroom. Shadows pushed to blue/cyan and skin tones bumped a bit.In my camera bag
I usually try to cover my options with 16-35mm, 55mm, and 70-200mm lenses in my bag. A few speed lights if I think I'm going to need them. And not much else.Feedback
Zac (with the tattoos) had a suit already, which made things easy. I wanted to try to contrast/compare the two visual cues involving tattoos and business suits. I like that our culture is adapting toward accepting people with ink and modifications into respectable estimations. We don't always immediately assume someone's status based on their markings or how they choose to represent themselves or their expressions. While the juxtaposition won't have the same effect it might have had 20 years ago, I like how it turned out. I would advise anyone to try to mix loaded ideas or visuals into a frame and see what thoughts they invoke. Play around with joining two opposing thoughts, trap them in a frame and see what happens. Subvert expectations, put a plot twist in a single image. And make friends with people who have interesting tattoos. ;)
