Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a memorial service for a man who collected antique and vintage cars and trucks. He had hundreds of vehicles in all stages of repair and disrepair. His wife hopes to create a museum with many of the vehicles. This is located in New Gloucester, Maine.

Time

The day was partially cloudy with sunshine and lots of mourners. It must have been midday since a memorial was held followed by a light lunch.

Lighting

This was shot in the midday sun - not ideal, but it was what it was. Strong shadows, made for rugged lighting.

Equipment

Canon t5i, 24-105mm lens, no tripod, no flash

Inspiration

I was intrigued by the patterns of the rust and the purity of the headlight.

Editing

I post-processed this in Lightroom from a RAW image. I chose to make the headlight stand out and the rust more dramatic than it appeared in the color version.

In my camera bag

For this photo I used a Canon t5i with a 24-105mm lens. It is my go-to lens for its versatility and clarity. Whenever I have bought a new lens, I have always bought the best lens that I can afford. My newer camera is a Canon 80D - a step up, but still cropped frame. It's light enough for my aging hands. I always have spare batteries, a remote shutter release, a tripod, lens cloths, extra SD cards, and a bar of chocolate.

Feedback

This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I asked permission. I will probably never get to see all those cars, trucks, farm implements, and mechanical items again. Always carry your camera with you - even if it's only your phone. The best camera to have is the one you have with you when you see the image you want. To capture something similar - go to a junkyard and keep looking.
