Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my "home studio" aka the spare room

Time

It was taken in the morning - best not to shoot babies too late in the day

Lighting

its cross lit and fairly close to the baby to make it a little softer and to prevent harsh shadows

Equipment

canon 5d2 and 24/70 2.8 L with a large soft box

Inspiration

when i was taking photos of babies regular this was one of my favourite images to do - bit like a signature shot for me

Editing

just general touching up in photoshop - levels and contrast that kinda thing and a bit of skin smoothing - nothing too much though with babies if you get the light right it minimises the need to edit too much

In my camera bag

now days i have 2 7d2's a 300mm 2.8 70-200 2.8 and 24-70 2.8 which i use for sports photography now - i still have the 5d2 - such a beautiful camera that

Feedback

with babies - always ensure you have someone at hand to help keep the baby propped up - health and safety is key when shooting babies - shots like this are generally shot as a composite - you most certainly should get newborn safety training as i did and the other thing that is key for shooting babies is patience....
