Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Luray Caverns in Virginia. There were pools of water that were perfectly clear and would reflect the stalactites hanging from the cealing.

Time

I am not sure about this question, and I am not sure it matters.... We were far underground. :)

Lighting

It was hard to get this image as it was hand held and very dark. Quite a challenge!

Equipment

This picture was taken with a Canon XTi, with a 18 - 55 mm lens, without a tripod. On camera flash was used.

Inspiration

My wife, daughter and I were touring through the caverns. They were lighted very well. Underground caverns are a delight to photograph because they are a almost unique location that a lot of people have not experienced. Crafty lighting was used to intensify the experience. It called out to be photographed, as it reminded me of the travels of Bilbo Baggins in a fantasy land.

Editing

Remarkably there was no post processing on this image. Probably because it was taken so long ago that software to do so was rare or not even invented yet (well, consumer available types anyway?). The photo was taken in Late June, 2007.

In my camera bag

Sadly, my trusty XTi went off to the great camera shop in the sky a few years back. It was an early "Rebel" series camera, and built like a tank. Carried it on endless adventures camping and traveling. I shoot with a Canon 6D and a 5Dsr these days, and my lenses range from a Nifty 50 to a Tamron 150-600. A whole pile of ND filters can also be found in my bag. These days I use a Mephoto Globetrotter tripod as well. This fellow is new, so I can't give a good review of it yet, but it seems to be working well for now!

Feedback

Today's cameras have a better ISO, and software to help clean up such a dark image. Spend some time learning how to hold a camera steady. with your elbows tucked into your chest. It takes some practice. Have patience and breath it all in. :)
