Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at a local historic homestead named Woodlands. Its situated in the small rural community of Gordonton in New Zealand.

Time

This was such a fun shoot. the light was all natural early afternoon light It was nicely diffused by the old lace curtains

Lighting

Amazing soft ambient window light diffused by lace curtains which gave the whole room a soft romantic glow

Equipment

Shot with my trusty Nikon D750 coupled with my much loved Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens

Inspiration

My model has recently won a retro pin up competition and as part of her prize package she had received a photoshoot. The whole vibe of the shoot was going to be vintage, so the old Woodlands homestead was the perfect location. The authentic 1800's furniture in the homestead made it easy to create some soft romantic imagery. The mirror used in this shot was a very old antique silver hand mirror. It was sitting on the dressing table as a part of the display in the main bedroom of the old house. It was a simple decision to use this as a prop for the photograph. I asked my model to check her lipstick in the mirror as she held it. I zoomed in to her reflection and click. the moment was captured.

Editing

There was no major post processing required on this image. It was one of those rare occasions where it all just fell into place.

In my camera bag

My bag will always contain my teo Nikon D750 bodies. a 24-70mm f2,8, and a 70-200mm f2.8 lens. then depending upon the shoot there may be a couple of prime lenses included. There will be a godox ad200 or two for some fill flash if required and this is coupled with a godox xt2 trigger.

Feedback

Plan your shoot well in advance. tie in your theme with your subject and your location as priorities. Talk to your model about wardrobe and makeup. All of these things are important to create the aesthetic for your work. Have fun and enjoy the shoot. Encourage your model to offer input as well. It is all part of the creative flow.
