Behind The Lens

Location

This photo, I took during our family walk in the forest.

Time

It was around midday; however, it doesn't matter much, as there was no sun shining.

Lighting

The day was cloudy. Such conditions create even and soft lighting.

Equipment

The equipment was quite simple: Canon EOS 40D + M42 to EOS adapter + Helios 44-3 lens + macro ring M42. Even if I usually shoot with Nikon gear, for macro shots with manual lenses, I prefer Canon. The reason is that M42 to EOS adapters come with audible focus confirmation. This helps a lot when focusing manually.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this picture came from the color combination. As blue and yellow colors are located almost on the opposite sides of the color wheel, this creates an attractive color combination.

Editing

Post-processing is an important step in my workflow. In the beginning, I always try to find the best cropping position and do some other basic steps later, such as reducing highlights, lifting shadows, creating micro-contrast by increasing whites and darkening blacks, and, of course, doing some final sharpening.

In my camera bag

As I already mentioned, I prefer Nikon gear; however, I do not say no to Canon too, especially when it comes to macro photography.

Feedback

In nature, especially in macro photography, you need to be slow. If you walk in a hurry, you will not be able to spot interesting objects, as in macro, they are usually very tiny.
