This photo was taken quite a few years ago now when I used to look after private aircraft for my day job.Time
I’d been waiting and watching the weather conditions all day waiting for the perfect window to take the shot. I’d planned on a long exposure to capture the motion in the fast moving clouds. To achieve this, I used a ten stop ND filter (the big stopper) on my camera to enable me to take a 30 second daytime exposure and capture that movement in the clouds.Lighting
The lighting conditions were changing all day long. It was a case of waiting for the right time.Equipment
I only had time to take a couple of shots due to being at work, so improvisation was key. No time for a tripod, I balanced the camera on the driver side window of the van I was driving (turned off the ignition to eliminate vibration) focused the shot, added the ND filter to the lens and fired off a few 30 second exposures. This was my favourite shot.Inspiration
I loved the way the aircraft was parked initially and with the backdrop of the dramatic sky, I thought I’d try and make an image that would stand out.Editing
Processed in Lightroom and Photoshop with some clarity and contrast added to the sky.In my camera bag
I’m generally a portrait photographer. I mostly use a 70-200 lens and carry around a Godox AD360. The large beauty dish is my modifier of choice!Feedback
I was privileged to hold a position that allowed me access to these beautiful private aircraft at the time. There are lots of places/aviation museums where one might e able to try a similar shot. Fingers crossed for interesting weather conditions though!
