Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in a field in the south of Ireland

Time

It was a beautiful sunny day towards the end of the summer. It was early afternoon and I was out in the garden practising some macro shots when I looked up and saw this big band of dark grey clouds rolling in.

Lighting

To one side of me there was this beautiful sunshine with clear bright skies and on the other was this big band of dark clouds. They were so low and heavy you'd almost think you could stand up and touch them!

Equipment

At the time I was only starting to learn photography so I went out and bought an old Canon 450d with kit lens to practise and learn the manual setting on a camera. I grabbed my 450d and went into the field. I didn't own any other pieces of equipment so just 450d with kit lens.

Inspiration

When i saw the sky i thought it would look amazing if I could show the light from the sun bringing out the gold colour from the hay bales verses the dark heavy clouds. And I loved how low down the clouds appeared to be, as I said it was almost as if you could touch them!

Editing

There was such a mix of bright sunshine and dark clouds I had to take a couple of shots, one to show the bright gold colour of the hay and another to really show those dark clouds, I blended both pictures together afterwards using gimp and Lightroom to get the image to look like I had seen it standing in the field!

In my camera bag

As I am still only a beginner I don't have an awful lot of equipment. I have Since upgraded my camera, I have a kit lens, a 50mm lens and a tripod.

Feedback

This shot was taken on my kit lens 18mm, iso 100, f11 and I played around with the shutter speed to expose for the hay and then the clouds. I suppose for beginners like me I'd say don't be afraid to try different things, play with the settings on your camera and see what they do!
