Location
At my husband's Avó's house in Funchal, Madiera Island, Portugal. This was in her sitting room. My husband was outside the window and she waved to him.Time
We had arrived at my husband's Avó's house around 12 noon to celebrate his Tio's birthday. We arrived earlier than everyone else because I wanted to take some portraits of Avó. It was a bit overcase outside, but we had a moment around 1:30pm before everyone arrived, and the sun peaked out from the clouds for a bit, where the most stunning light entered through the window. It was in that period that I got this photo.Lighting
I had noticed how lovely and dramatic the window light looked during a previous visit, so I had this set up in my mind before we arrived that day. It far surpassed my expectations because the clouds gave an even moodier look to the light than I'd seen before. It all just fell into place as the light fell through the window.Equipment
I took this with my Canon 7D handheld and 35mm lens set to f/2.5. I had to work with a high ISO, using 4000 ISO I got a lovely grainy look which contributed to the black and white conversion. No artificial light was used in this image.Inspiration
We went to visit my husband's Avó, because we knew she wouldn't be able to visit South Africa again. Her last visit was around 18 years ago when my husband was a young boy. He hadn't been able to see her again until we visited. I wanted to make sure I took a meaningful photo of her, for the whole family as we knew she was frail. A few weeks ago she passed away at the age of 87. We now have this image to remember her by.Editing
I brought the image into Lightroom and I converted it into black and white, giving a bit more contrast and adding a vignette for more mood.In my camera bag
I have now recently added a 6D mk2 but wstill keep my trusted 7D with me as well. I prefer prime lenses so I have a 35mm F2 and a 50mm F1.8, I also have a 10-22mm zoom that I use for most of my travel photography.Feedback
I recommend finding someone to sit for your portrait, that you can connect with. It will help to get their personality out in the portrait. A portrait doesn't always need to have a person looking into the camera. Often you can see more of their character by having them interact with someone. Wait for the light, be patient with the light so that you get the right feel for the photo you want.
