Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Las Vegas. They would have a great car show on Fremont St. Downtown Las Vegas right in front of the casinos every year. I used to plan my Vegas trip around the car show.

Time

Just like Las Vegas....It was HOT and around 3 in the afternoon. The Vegas sun is so hot it stings if you were in direct sun.

Lighting

Since the Downtown area has the Fremont St. Experience, which is a massive light show canopy they turn on at night, it made for a giant light diffuser. Vegas summers brings bright, harsh, burning sunlight. Some vehicles that were parked on the edge of the canopy made for some tricky shooting with part of the vehicle in bright sun, deep shadow and diffused light all in one. I was lucky this one was under the canopy. With paint like mirrors there was no getting around reflections.

Equipment

At the time I had a Nikon D90 with an 18-55mm lens hand held. I shot it in Raw at 18mm, ISO 250 f3.5 at 1/50 sec.

Inspiration

I take a lot of auto pics. I love the older cars because of their styling and curves. Many have beautiful and flawless paint jobs but when you walked by this one...WOW!!! The paint color shifted. I was on one knee to get this shot but if I stood up the colors changed. One step left or right where you see blue it would be purple. Where you see green it would change to orange. and so on. I think I walked around this car 15 minutes just watching the colors change. Then I had to patiently wait for people to move for about another 15 minutes.

Editing

Yeah....I probably over processed it a bit. I was just learning raw processing and I was trying to get it as i saw it. And that's about what my eyes saw. I did crop it due to the fact there was so many people looking at the vehicle, getting a shot without anyone there was virtually impossible.

In my camera bag

Now days I have a Nikon D610 and a 28-300 lens. Also use a Tamron 90mm macro 2.8. For me I like the versatility of zooms especially when shooting at automotive exhibitions. If I have to shoot through the window to get the full interior then just a detail, a knob or dial...I'm good without having to change lenses.

Feedback

If someone loves to shoot automotive photos I would say walk around the car a time or two. Look inside outside all around. This shot was specifically for the paint. But maybe it is just a body line, a grill, bumper, a light. 99% of my auto shots are taken on one knee. I bring myself to the level of the car. It just looks better. Also when I shoot a full vehicle, it is 3/4 view.
