Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Schwabacher Landing area of the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, U.S.A.

Time

This image was taken about 6:45 am. ISO=100, f:11, 1/6 sec., 40 mm.

Lighting

I used the most universal lighting in the world, the Sun.

Equipment

I use a Canon 6D with the 24 to 105 kit lens. I always use a tripod. I also used a circular polarizer filter.

Inspiration

I was first inspired to go to the Grand Teton National Park after seeing Ansel Adam's famous photo taken at the Snake River overlook. While I was there, I discovered so many other beautiful places to photograph, such as this location at the Schwabacher Landing. the Snake River is usually still and calm due to a few Beaver dams along this stretch of the river providing such mirror smooth reflections.

Editing

Since I shoot in raw, there will always be some amount of post-processing needed to be done. I started in Lightroom and adjusted the contrast, the black and white points, opened up the shadows some and adjusted the highlights. I used some selective dodging and burning, and added a soft vignette.

In my camera bag

I carry a Canon 300 mm telephoto lens, lens hood, N.D. and grad N.D. filters, a wireless (intervalometer) remote, a 2x tele extender, extra batteries, and a rain cover for the camera.

Feedback

I get up early in order to catch the blue and golden hours. I stay up late for the same reasons. When I'm planning a road trip to go shoot somewhere, I always check the weather app to see what the weather will be like. For a landscape photographer, bad weather is really good weather.
