Behind The Lens
Location
This was near 2 Jack Lake in Banff, Alberta. I live in Alberta, so it was just a short trip a way from home for me.Time
After spending the morning in Banff, my friend and I drove to 2 Jack Lake in the afternoon to scout it out for some potential ice skating. On the way over, we saw a small herd of elk just beside the road. We stopped and watched them for about 20 minutes before this magical moment happened.Lighting
The elk got a bit of back lighting as the sun was starting to hide behind the mountains.Equipment
I used my Nikon D800 with the 24-70 nikkor lens. Definitely not an ideal lens for shooting wildlife, but I was still able to capture a good amount of detail.Inspiration
I truly just stumbled upon the opportunity. That's what makes this photo even more special for me. You really can't plan too much with wildlife, but if you are patient, you might just catch that perfect moment.Editing
I do most of my editing in Lightroom. Besides my usual tweaking, I adjusted the exposure, and I used a blue gradient filter for the sky. I also used a vignette just to add a little more drama. In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D800 with me, usually with my Nikkor 24-70mm. It's been a great walkabout lens for me. The setup is quite heavy (~5kg) but it is sturdy. Besides bringing back up batteries and memory cards, I like to bring back up UV filters. I have broken some filters in the past, so now I make sure I have another one ready to go at all times.Feedback
Get outside! The more often you are out in nature, the more likely you will encounter some wildlife. And of course, make sure you ALWAYS have your camera ready to go in the car no mater where you are going.
