Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on a running trail under a bridge using natural light only.

Time

This photo was taken at around 5pm. Shooting 2 hours before sunset is my favorite time of the day to shoot, you start getting that beautiful golden light coming through.

Lighting

For this photo I used natural light only. I didn't use any strobe, flash or light modifier. This location has cement walls and cement floor all around and that's what is reflecting that golden light on her face

Equipment

I used a Nikon D600 and a Nikkor 85mm 1.8 lens for this.

Inspiration

Megan is a fabulous make up artist, so we wanted to showcase her incredible make up skills on a beauty shoot that we could publish on a magazine. She did this make up on herself on location using a hand mirror only! Yes, she is that good.

Editing

I use photoshop for post-processing. I use Frequency Separation to even the tones on the skin, Dodge & Burn to enhance light and shadows on edges and corners of the face and color grading using color curves layers.

In my camera bag

I usually bring one camera, 2 batteries, 4 SD Cards, 1 50 mm 1.4, 1 85mm 1.4, one small reflector, and steel binder clips in case we need to tighten clothing pieces.

Feedback

I usually don't shoot in direct sunlight. Every time I am looking for locations, I am looking for places with shade to put the model in and surfaces around it that reflect or block the light on them. In this specific case, using a bridge is perfect for me because you can shoot at any time of the day since it will always provide shade to stand on. Move your model closer to the walls to create shadows on her face or closer to the boundary between light and shade to get more light on his/her face.
