Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo when I was living in Orange County, California. There are a lot of apartment complexes out there with amazing amenities like pool, spa, gym, outdoor areas and this is actually one of the walls inside the amenity center that leads to the main pool and patio.

Time

I took this around 10:00 am if I remember correctly, I usually shoot outdoors with natural light only. This time I was shooting indoors using window light so I wasn't really concerned about natural light conditions.

Lighting

This was the first time I shoot inside an amenity center. This space is open to all neighbors so I tried to choose a day and time where all my neighbors were supposed to be at work (Wednesday at 10:00 am), still for whatever reason I had neighbors coming and coming into the amenity center to "grab a coffee" and chill there in the sofa's next to us. It is a little bit uncomfortable when that happens, luckily all my neighbors behaved and Karina was such a trooper, she killed it despite the audience and their stares.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D600 using an 85mm 1.8 lens. Window light only.

Inspiration

I love to include textures and patterns in my photos, this place had amazing walls and such an amazing light from a huge sliding door that opens to the pool and patio that I knew I had to do a shoot there one day. I put together a mood board for Karina and we went for it.

Editing

I use Photoshop to process all my work. My process include Frequency Separation, Dodging and Burning (locally and globally), matching skin tones, making the eyes pop, and color grading.

In my camera bag

I like to pack light. I can't live without an 85mm, that's my go to lens like 90% of the times. Other than that I carry a 50mm 1.4 for tighter spaces, additional memory cards, additional batteries, a portable reflector, office clamps and that's about it.

Feedback

This a pretty much strait forward shot. You don't need much to capture something similar. I would recommend a few things tho: 1. Brainstorm outfits and mood. 2. Find an interesting room that would match those outfits and includes a window. 3. Make sure you have plenty of coffee for your nosey neighbors lol
