Behind The Lens

Location

This beautiful church, named Hallgrímskirkja, is located on a hilltop in the center of Reykjavík, Iceland. It can be seen from anywhere in the city as it stands 74.5 metres (244 ft) tall and one of the tallest structures in the country. It’s design was to resemble the trap rocks, mountains and glaciers of Iceland's landscape.

Time

I took this photo after an unsuccessful 5 hour attempt to catch some more photos of the Aurora Borealis. This was my last night in Iceland and remembered I hadn’t photographed the church! A pushed myself to walk up the hill to photograph it and was astonished to see the super moon directly behind the church. Actual time was 1:15 AM.

Lighting

The church is very well lit and looks beautiful from any distance. The addition of the Super moon behind it along with the mist in the air created a halo around the church.

Equipment

I had my Nikon D750 with me and my Nikon 14-24mm lens. I used my tripod and shutter release.

Inspiration

It was my last day in Iceland before visiting Germany. I was obsessed with getting some photos of the Aurora Borealis. Unbeknown to me I visited during the super moon and it took several attempts to get a clear night. Afterwords I realized I hadn’t taken any night photos of this beautiful church. Luck would play the biggest part of the timing of this photo.

Editing

I did small edits in Lightroom I believe. There were only a couple people around and they left as I was setting up my tripod so no photoshop needed.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Nikon camera and two lenses. A wide angle and a telephoto. I also keep cleaning cloth, spare batteries, etc. If I know what I’m shooting I try to adjust as to not carry all my gear.

Feedback

I know people who can plan a perfect shot with the moon in the exact right position using apps. I’m not that person as much as I’d like to be. My only advise would be, You have to push yourself a bit more. After I spent 5 hours outside in Iceland, I didn’t want to climb a hill and shoot a church. I’m glad I did. This photo was truly a happy accident and you never know when or where they’ll come along.
