This photo was taken in Katmai National Park, Alaska while I was guiding photographers for Lake Clark Air and The Farm Lodge.Time
This photo was taken mid morning. The brown bear cub was just waking from his morning nap and offered this great shot of his "bed-head" hair.Lighting
The lighting was quite flat and we do not use the flash when we are this close to wildlife, so the challenge is to find enough light to provide some good contrast when the natural light is low.Equipment
I was shooting a Nikon D800 with a fixed 300mm 2.8 lens.Inspiration
We had been waiting for a while for the adult bears to start getting more active fishing in the stream. While we waited I had been keeping an eye on this little cub who was napping. As he sat up from his nap he reminded me so much of my kids when they first wake up that I had to grab a few shots of him waking, yawning, stretching, and walking a little wobbly as the sleep wore off.Editing
The only post processing was a bit of adjustment in exposure. I tend to underexpose just slightly and then bring the shadows back out for clarity with the Nikon. In my camera bag
I pack light because we have to carry everything with us throughout the day. Typically I have my D800 with the 300mm for wildlife and a fixed 50mm for landscape. A light tripod, filters, a remote shutter release, and some basic cleaning supplies.Feedback
Alaska is just an awesome place to shoot wildlife. It is a huge state with countless opportunities to shoot wildlife, scenery, culture, and outdoor sports. The best chance to get the shots you want is to find the right guides to get you into the right places. It is easy to spend a lot of time (and money) moving about the state in search of those places. So do you research and plenty of planning in advance to make the most of your time. Look for experienced guides, businesses that have existed for a number of years, and companies that have a reputation for safety (if traveling by boat or small plane).
