Location
I took this photo in the Zoo of Dortmund in Germany where the lion was lying in his cage close to the glas. I was one of the first visitors who entered the zoo this morning, so that I could plan my shot without being disturbed and with a totally relaxed lion.Time
The capture was made early in the morning when the zoo had just opened.Lighting
As this photo was taken indoor, I really didn´t care very much about the lighting.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 5D MIII with my Tamron 600mm lens. As I prefer to be as flexible as possible the photo was taken without using a tripod.Inspiration
When I saw the lion lying close behind the glas of his cage and having the chance to have a close look into his eyes, I felt fear although the lion didn´t move and I knew that nothing could happen. This was the moment I knew, I´ve to take a picture of the lion and his majestic looking eyes.Editing
As the lion was lying on the floor of his cage, I twist the photo in that way, that you can look into the lions eyes directly. After having done this I choosed the 1x1 format, whicht seems, for me, to be the best format to have a focus on the most important content, the lion. And, of course at the end I converted the shot into black and white to make it more dramatic. Anything else was a normal workflow concerning sharpness, noise reduction and so on.In my camera bag
When I´m going to make some zoo-photography, which means for me to take some animal portraits, I prefer my EOS 5D or my Sony Alpha 600 with either a 600mm lense or for the Sony with a 200mm lense. To be more flexible I normally abdicate on using a tripod.Feedback
If you want to take a similar capture make always sure that the focus is on the eyes, so that they´re clompletly sharp. Another tip is, try to adjust the eyes horizontally, so that you get the impression to look directly into them.
