I shot this photograph in Los Angeles in studioTime
I shot it indoors with artificial light during the day.Lighting
I used a Broncolor Para 222, with an HMI 1500 Tube. The Parabolic umbrella is an amazing tool to light with, you can achieve many looks and moods with just the smallest adjustment, and the shiny surface makes the skin glow making the need for retouching very minimal. The surface is so large that you can stand in front of it and not cast a shadow on your subject.Equipment
RED EPIC-X DRAGON with Zeiss Super Speed T1.3 50mm on a tripod, Broncolor Para 222, with an HMI 1500 Tube on a Highboy Riser.Inspiration
I was doing a series of portraits of creative people of all types, and Hayley is one of the most creative and talented people I know, she is a fashion designer, a painter and a children's book author. I've known her for years, and finally got a chance to shoot her, so I guess she inspired me.Editing
This image is actually a composite of three different images. One of Hayley (the girl), one of her dog (from a different take) and then a third one of just her hair flying a little more than in the original image. Combined in Photoshop as layers. In my camera bag
I always have a few things with me, but don't always use them. I always carry a set of Lume Cubes (4) they are great for lighting nooks and crannies if you need to, and I always have a R0DE Pocket Lav ( I plug it in my iPhone ) in case I need to record impromptu sound, and I'm not with a sound mixer. Cameras, and Lenses are different depending on the assignment, or the subject. In the case of this image I was shooting motion and stills so I used the RED EPIC-X DRAGON and the Zeiss super speeds. As you shoot motion, you can add little markers to the moments you like as if shooting stills. Then when reviewing the footage, you can add more markers, and then export all the marked frames as still in 20 Megapixel RAW files. It's fantastic.Feedback
When shooting people I feel it's always about letting the subject find their own comfort, telling someone to "just be yourself" is the worst thing to do, it' will make them more self conscience. Giving them time to feel comfortable is key in my opinion. I try to talk to them about anything else but the shoot, and let them talk about themselves . This is good to do if you are doing a portrait, or shooting an actor or model that needs to play character. Let them feel and be safe.
