Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo around Christmastime at a local garden center. They had a small Douglas Fir tree farm set up and had just run the sprinklers over the trees. The lighting and the way it reflected against the natural coloring of the tree was so captivating.

Time

The picture was taken around mid-to-late afternoon right before a thunderstorm hit. The sky was pretty dark and it was quite humid outside. I felt this helped to create an almost mysterious quality to the picture.

Lighting

I wanted the viewer to see Christmas, to feel it. The tree farm had hung up some outdoor string lights. Combined with the darkness of the sky, it really made the colors pop.

Equipment

Camera: Canon PowerShot SX720 HS I took the photo the old-fashioned way- point and click. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

I took the photo when I was fifteen, and as a teenage hobby photographer, I photograph simply because I like to look at pretty things and remember them. This photo was special to me, as I was preparing to enter my first photography competition. I have always been interested in photography and love learning about it.

Editing

As hobby photographer, I don't know a whole lot about typical photography terminology. I did edit the picture using the Adobe Photoshop app. After I took the original picture, I felt the colors were a bit lacking and the humidity had cast a sort of haze around the lens. As you can see in the picture, I did leave some of the haze/fog to create a kind of mystery. Other than that, I just brightened the picture as a whole and highlighted some of the colors.

In my camera bag

I usually just pack my camera. It really is all I need.

Feedback

Just try an work with the weather. Even if it looks dull and miserable outside, chances are there is still something pretty to look at.
