Location
In Oulanka National Park, while I was on an autumn trip in Kuusamo, Finland.Time
Just before sunset, I had been driving all day and wanted to do a short hike before going to bed so this was a perfect location.Lighting
The light was really flat all day, but the coloured trees still made the scene look really nice and contrasty especially with the river flowing by and all that - such an easy composition.Equipment
Sony A7ii with the FE16-35mm f4 - excellent combination for landscapes and hiking!Inspiration
The few weeks in autumn when the colors are at their peak - "Ruska" as we Finns call it - is absolutely gorgeous in northern Finland. I knew Oulanka National Park was well known for its landscapes and had a week off so I decided to take a trip that turned out to be a great success even though I had to sleep in a car with very little space and very cold nights. The windows were actually frosted from the inside when I woke up one morning...Editing
Yes - I process most of my landscapes quite a bit but this didn't need a whole lot of work. The key was to increase the luminance of the reds, yellows and oranges individually in Lightroom to make the colors stand out without over saturation. In my camera bag
My primary weapon of choice is the Sony A7ii with the 16-35mm f4, along with 14mm and 28mm for the Northern Lights and Milky Way and 55mm f2 and 90mm macro when I need something longer. The zoom is almost permanently attached to my camera though, the focal range is very nice!Feedback
The color peak only lasts for two weeks or so every autumn so you have to be ready when it starts! The weeks can vary annually so it's difficult to book a trip beforehand, and therefore the best option would be to find a nice location somewhere near.
