Location
This photo was taken downtown San Antonio Texas. I love the old buildings and architecture there. Lots of history. I liked this location because of the brick and amazing natural light.Time
This shot was taken late in the afternoon so there was nice soft light. The narrow street created a cool shadow and kept the harsh light out. I prefer shooting late in the day to get better, more flattering light. This particular model has a great look with near perfectly smooth skin.Lighting
With this model and location the light was perfect. She has such a soft look to her face that the natural light accentuates. I prefer to use natural light in most of my photos and this one shows just how even, soft light can help create the mood. I wanted to show her with an almost uneasy look as if she saw something that might concern her. She nailed it.Equipment
This was shot with my Nikon D750 and 50mm lens. I find the 50mm lens to be the best focal length to shoot at especially on the street. 50mm focal distance is just about the same as what the eye sees in real life and there is very little, if any distortion to this lens.Inspiration
Actually, the model herself was my inspiration. This particular model was very experienced and she was a natural in front of the camera. I love shooting street photography and she made it easy. When I shoot street photography and I am using a model I want it to look as natural as possible. I want the images to look candid almost as if I was shooting a stranger on the street. This is such a close up image so it is clearly not a candid shot, but the expression on her face almost convinces you otherwise.Editing
I try not to "change" my images with too much post processing but this image had a little work done to it. This model has flawless skin so there was very little retouching done to her. I used a little dodge and burn to add contrast to her hair and then just a little color grading to the entire image to warm it up just slightly. In my camera bag
My camera bag is pretty small. I try not to carry a ton of gear because I like to keep my shoot simple. If you have a lot of different lenses and other gear in your bag sometimes you can get distracted and confused on what to use for a particular shot. For me, my 50mm is my go-to lens, however I love my 70-200mm lens and the amazing bokeh it creates. I also have a 24-70 but find it to not be as sharp as I would prefer. All these lenses go great with my Nikon D750.Feedback
My advice is to keep it simple and natural. Find a subject that looks interested and just experiment. Shoot in RAW so you have more flexibility with your images and get out of auto mode on your camera. The only way to capture amazing images is to get out and start shooting.
