Love this! Great perspective! Perfect title. Is this near Crested Butte?

No, it's hidden away outside Silverton, up the road to Animas Forks.

Behind The Lens

Location

In the mountains above Silverton, Colorado.

Time

Middle of the day, actually.

Lighting

The light was bright, but variably muted by cloud movement.

Equipment

I used a graduated ND filter, probably a 1-stop. The sky was light, but cloudy, and I wanted to darken the sky a bit to bring out the clouds behind the vehicle. Because I was also doing long exposures to capture the cloud movement in other shots, I was using a tripod. There was also a polarizer on the lens. I primarily use a Sony body now, but I've taken this shot with both my Canon and Sony bodies. The key is the filters.

Inspiration

Abandoned things are my thing and this car was on my list. It's not too far from home, so I've been there several times. This time, the foliage was perfect, although as it was a bit windy, so the foliage moving didn't contribute positively to the intended long exposure effect. I went with the intention of capturing cloud movement behind the vehicle to touch on the movement of time, but I liked this shot the best. Next time, there will be snow involved.

Editing

Minimal post. I darkened the clouds and brought up the shadows on the vehicle, but otherwise the exposure was nearly perfect, thanks to my filters and tripod.

In my camera bag

Now, Sony a7RIII body with Canon 100-400 f/4 and metabones adapter, Sigma 14mm for Canon with Sigma adapter, Samyang 35mm for Sony, and Sony 24-104 f/4. Wine Country Camera adapter system, Feisol tripod, Really Right Stuff BH-55 ball head, ND and polarizer filters, star focus filter, and wired and wireless remotes.

Feedback

During the shoot, start low and work your way up until you find an approach angle you like. You'll know it when you see it, depending on the vehicle's orientation to background, foreground, and light source(s).
