Behind The Lens

Location

This is Mount Hood, shot in the reflection of Lost Lake in Oregon.

Time

This was a spring morning and it was actually about 45 degrees at 5:00 am start. The light on this image was around 6:15am and the warm light just crept down the mountain as the sun rose. My favorite time to shoot anything outside.

Lighting

The gold warm light creeping down the mountain with the blue light of the mountain in shadow made this image a special one. There is still snow on the mountain in the spring time and the contrast of those cool colors against the warm colors is why this image makes you stick with the focus of the mountain.

Equipment

I shoot with a D7000 Nikon, the lens was my 80-200 f-3. It was shot on a sandbag and a short tripod on a set of rocks at the edge of the lake.

Inspiration

I am a Fine Artist as well as a photographer and this mountain reflected into Lost Lake was on my bucket list for images I wanted to take while living in Oregon. A perfectly calm lake was not as attractive as this minor wave in the water and I believe it just adds character to the image. I have only lived in the State for 8 years now so I have lots of images to take but this one is one my special ones from this beautiful State.

Editing

No

In my camera bag

I have a 50 mm Sigma lens. f 2.8, a 80-200 Nikon lens f 3, a 200 -600 Tamaron Zoom Lens I use for sports. I have 2 unipods and 2 Tripods, one big one and one small one of each.

Feedback

I think the best advice for landscape images is to scout the shot the day before you shoot. Take a few images purely for composition. If you need a tripod, then test out the image and see if you like the results. I always have chalk with me so I can mark a rock, or a log where I was the night before. I simply set up right where I chalked out the placement of my tri-pod and I can set up in the dark with a head lamp early in the morning before sunrise. I really believe the homework is worth the prize. I have layers of warmth so I can peal off as it gets warmer and I take about 100 images while the sun rises. There is always a winner in the pile.
