Location
This photo was taken in Vysocina Region (Bohemian-Moravian Highlands) in Czech Republic during a Birds of Prey Photo Workshop.Time
Shortly after the sunset on 4th of March 2017Lighting
I love to use natural light. Shooting shortly after sunset enables to avoid the harsh light causing unwanted shadows.Equipment
I used my Canon 5DSR handheld with a 70-200mm 2,8 lens at 180 mm, f/2,8 to blur the background, shutter 1/500 and ISO 640 to enable faster shutter speedInspiration
I love birds of prey and always wanted to get closer to them, to capture in flight shots as well as static portraits in a beautiful natural environmentEditing
I use Adobe Camera Raw and Nik Collection for the basic post-processing, adjusting white balance and contrast and also used noise reduction. In my camera bag
I am using two full frame cameras - each has a different lens attached (usually a wide angle and telephoto) and this enables me to react quickly in any situation. I don't leave the house without the two lenses I use the most 24-70mm and 100-400mm. For any wildlife trip, I also pack the 70-200 2.8 which was used to capture this shot.Feedback
Think out of the box. My camera has a 5 frames per second burst speed, which can not compete with the super fast wildlife DSLR's. I was trying to catch the owl in flight, which was a bit of a hit and miss approach with this camera. It is not impossible, but you have to be able to predict the flight path of your subject and respond very quickly. Mastering the technique takes time and patience. After a number of unsuccessful attempts to get an in flight shot I would be happy with I saw the owl resting on the branch and I suddenly found this centered composition eye-catching.
