Location
This photo was shot at Cannon Beach, not far from Newport, Oregon. I like to travel for a week each month to some North American location to take photos. This was taken during one of those weekly trip - this one to the Oregon coast.Time
I was up early to catch sunrise at a nearby location: Ecola State Park. After finishing there I wandered down to the beach nearby which you see in this photo.Lighting
Early morning lighting is dramatic no matter what, but I do make adjustments using Lightroom and Photoshop.Equipment
Taken with a Nikon D5200 using a Tamron 18-270 f/3.5-6.3 lens. Shot at f/7.1, 1/200 sec, ISO-200.Inspiration
Cannon Beach is one of the classic beaches along the Oregon coast. Its most famous photographic landmark is Haystack Rock. If you concentrate just on shooting that iconic stone you can miss out on other potential great shots such as this one. The real plus to the photo, however, was the foggy early morning that adds a certain mystery to the photo.Editing
Most of the post-processing was done using Lightroom. I start with cropping, then head into their Basic adjustments with assistance from the Histogram, then move on to Clarity, Tone Curse, and finally Color. On this particular photo I went one small step further using NIK Color Efex 4 to make minor adjustments to the fog.In my camera bag
On most trips I will have four cameras and three lenses with me. First, I always carry my iPhone in my pants pocket (You never know when you will spot a good photo!). Many times when I am just doing a walk-about I bring my point-and-shoot, the Nikon A900, which I truly love especially for macro. My two DSLRs are the Nikon D5200 and Nikon D810. As for lenses, I have the above mentioned Tamron 18-270 as well as a Sigma 10-20, f/1.4-5.6 for wide angle, and a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 as the base camera. In addition, I occasionally use a tripod or assortment of filters. The most important things in my bags are the extra batteries and the cleaning fluids with wipes.Feedback
My best advise is to travel as much as possible to parks, beaches, mountains - well . . . pretty much anywhere. Besides expanding the possibility of good photos you get good exercise, broaden you perspective on the world, and meet lots of interesting people.
