Behind The Lens

Location

Photograph was taken in my backyard in 2016. Like most of my photographic experiments, the subjects are hand built set-ups, and these are shot with the camera pointed straight down.

Time

unknown

Lighting

Natural light.

Equipment

Sony SLT-A37 kit lens, homemade boom and tripod

Inspiration

My creative drive is to do experiments focused on iteration of photographic or other visual mediums. This particular artwork collects together three radial iterations of different photographs. Given the year, 2016, this would be among my first such experiments in radial iteration. As of 2021 I have radially iterated hundreds of photographs. Looking back, this early example is not very refined, yet its atmosphere is to me nicely 'old fashioned.'

Editing

In 2016, my photographs were not subject to much post work, be it corrective or enhancing. Of course, the photographs were iterated using software that allows me to spin a radius around a center point.

In my camera bag

My photographic work is very specialized. It is most akin to overhead product shots, although I shoot hand built still-life subjects outdoors in natural light. My approach has changed a lot over the past few years simply due to learning a lot. When this was shot in 2016, my approach could be charitably described as being 'naive.' This is not an unusual stage for a self-taught shooter, especially one who has not climbed the usual photographic development path. In noting this, my set-up in 2021 is very simple. Today I use a Sony Alpha 7rII and a Tamron 24mm wide angle 2x. This gets attached to a boom with a scavenged head at the end pointed straight down. Late afternoon natural light is home for me. I like shadows. My specialty shots do not reflect much fussiness because I prefer the veracity of the straight-forward capture. Obviously, the Sony A7rII is much more capable than the Sony A-37.

Feedback

Anybody working with iterations, mirror symmetries, afine and fractal manipulations, likely already understands it is a rabbit hole of sorts. The finished images often evoke immediate and popular appeal. Given this, my one guidance is: become adept at identifying and elevating your best experiments from the massive amount of experiments iterative processing makes possible.
