Location
On our 60 acre ranch in upper east TN.Time
About an hour before sunset.Lighting
The way the light was gently sweeping into the woods was the reason I picked that particular spot on the property. It was one of those kind of "lit up" with excitement moments that only other togs would understand and that kids of togs roll their eyes about saying, "We know, mom. We know. It's light. Yaayyy," hence the look on my daughter's face here. I set her in front of the light, not directly in it. This helped create separation from the background and avoid any hotspots on her skin. I have a natural preference for backlit images.Equipment
Nikon D700, Nikkor 105mm f2.8 lens 1/200thsec, f/2.8, ISO 200, spot metering, manual, handheldInspiration
I was having a mini meltdown at the fact I'd just celebrated my eldest daughter's last birthday of her childhood, since she just turned 17. As I moved towards acceptance, I asked if she'd like to do a shoot that showcased her unique personality. We worked together to choose her outfit and items. It conveys her well. The girly girl dress with rebellious converse shoes, beautiful but down-to-earth, and she has an intense love of art, mixed media and Jane Davenport being her favorite genre & artist.Editing
I did. That's always my favorite part. I edited this mostly in Photoshop with my usual process of cleaning up any flaws, skin tone, dodging/burning/lighting, and polishing with some color toning. In my camera bag
D300, D750 (just upgraded from the D700), 12-24mm, 50mm 1.4, 105mm 2.8, 70-300, continuous led, batteries, charger, sd cards, cf cards, lens wipes, and tripod. That being said, I'm perfectly comfortable leaving the bag at home and heading out with just the D750 with either the 50 or 105 lens attached, and often that's the case.Feedback
Whether a client or just for hobby work, have a part in deciding the outfit and props. Study color theory. I knew the red would pop against the greens of the forest and the browns of the woods would help compliment the rich tones of the red. Light...study light. It's everything in photography. Look for it. Study it so much that you get excited seeing it. Study it enough that your own kids roll their eyes at your excitement yet again when you see those pretty pockets of light.
