Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a rough coastline of Ruegen Island, the biggest island of Germany.

Time

It was a stormy morning on the Baltic Sea and i was hoping for good light conditions as the weather map was showing some break in the clouds.

Lighting

I always use natural light, because i am a nature lover and want to show the landscapes as natural as they are. Because the conditions werent good on this morning i tried to get out something unique in compositon. I came to a decision with the big rock in the centre of my photo and a few of those small rocks around it for the foreground.

Equipment

The camera i used for this photo was a Panasonic Lumix G3 and a Lumix Vario 14-42 F3,5 lens, a tripod and a Soft Edge Grad ND 0,9 filter from Formatt Hitech. Later i changed my gear into the Nikon APS-C system.

Inspiration

Because the weather conditions were not perfect i tried out something different in composition. I love coastal landscapes and the coast of Ruegen Island is pretty diverse. It is some kind of paradise for those photographers who love to shoot coastal landscapes. There are many inspiring elements around the island - rocks, trees, water pools and the popular chalk cliffs.

Editing

I think the filter did a good job so i only had to change the white balance, the saturation and the contrast to get the landscape as dramatic as i felt it was on the spot.

In my camera bag

I use a Nikon D7100 and my spare body is a Nikon D5300 with a few lenses. When i started i thought it might be good to have a bag full of different lenses but today i mostly use a Tamron 11-16mm F2,8 and a Sigma 18-35mm F1,8 for my wide angle landscapes. Sometimes i got a Nikkor 50mm F1,8 for experimental landscapes or cityscapes in my bag.

Feedback

Photography to me means to use the natural light to get special scenes. It gives the photo the dot over an i. If the weather is not on your side just try around with new points of view to get something different. The composition is another important addition that makes a photo interesting.
