Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture in the mara wildlife reserve in Kenya

Time

It was taken early in the morning around an hour after sunrise

Lighting

I liked the way the rising sun was shining into the lions eyes

Equipment

Nkion D810 200-500mm at 290mm

Inspiration

I liked the way the Lion was warming itself in the rising sun

Editing

Most wildlife shots stay in color. I decided monochrome would work well in this one to emphasis the textures and draw attention to the highlights in the eye

In my camera bag

Normally 2 full frame bodies, 60mm macro, 18-24mm 80-200mm. for wildlife I use a 200-500 5.6 or a 200-400 f4

Feedback

Try and get on eye level with all your animal images, this gives viewers a better connection with the subject. Position yourself so the lighting is right and try to get a highlight in the subjects eye. Lastly dont be afraid to crop in tightly or shoot in monochrome
