Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a photo safari in Kenya. It was my first day out!

Time

Taken late morning/noon

Lighting

Its a harsh time to shoot but If the light is positioned right you can still get some lower contrast images. I aimed for more backlight and used center average metering for more precise exposure.

Equipment

Nikon D700, 80-400mm. Hand held

Inspiration

We were driving around and this Lion came right to us on the same road. She was moving her cubs (3 in all) to a safer place. It was amazing watching her, a truly once in a lifetime experience.

Editing

Some shadow/highlight control was used due to the backlight

In my camera bag

For Safaris I use a Nikon D850 200-400 f4, 80-200 2.8 and a 18-24 2.8. For general and city shoots a 60mm 2.8 macro, a 50mm 1.2, 24-300. A couple of speedlights, gitzo tripod and a ball head and clap for using on safari vehicles
