Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a beach in Southern California. Yes there are still a few areas left in their natural state. It's exact location is up to you to find out.

Time

Late afternoon on the West Coast. That combined with a very low tide. Pretty simple really.

Lighting

A clear day. Late afternoon sun. Light reflecting off the wet sand and the beach bluffs. It's all about the angle of the light hitting the subjects.

Equipment

I shot this with a Canon 7D, Canon 10-22 lens on a tripod. Oh and the Bike to get there.

Inspiration

Riding along the low tide shoreline in the late afternoon. The quality of the light was stunning. Everything seemed to have a warm glow. When I saw how good the bike looked in that light with the same light hitting the bluffs, well, that is what inspired me to take this shot.

Editing

When the light is perfect, the exposure correct, focus right on and the shot composed well there wasn't much post to do. I converted this RAW file to a tiff, imported to Lr, slight foreground exposure adjustment, hit it with the Lr preset "punch" and that was it!

In my camera bag

I took this shot with my old gear. I just upgraded to a Canon 5D IV. I added a Canon 16-35L III. I usually carry a Canon 50 1.4 too. Canon 100 2.8L macro, Canon 100-400L. Along with the new 5D 16-35 combo I've added a 9 stop 82mm B&W ND filter.

Feedback

It's all about the location and the light. When photographic conditions all come together then you can add whatever elements you want. I knew the light, tide and time of day was going to be perfect to shoot the landscape views I was looking for. But after getting those shots I wanted more. The bike sitting there really caught my eye. So I shot a few more with the bike as a foreground subject. If you like what you are seeing shoot several different angles too. You never know which one you will like best till you sit down and start working on the shots. Sometimes you get surprised!
