Location
This photo was taken on top of Mount Geoffrey Escarpment Provincial Park, Hornby Island B.C. Canada. Hornby Island is one of the Gulf Islands and where I had lived for 24 years. This photo was taken near it's highest point of 1080'. There are lovely trails throughout the rainforest-like woods and along the cliffs arbutus trees cling and undulate to the panoramic views of Lambert Channel, beyond Denman Island to the Mountains of Vancouver Island.Time
Around mid morning we hiked into the woods and along the trails catching the light at the top of the escarpment. This was in the winter.Lighting
It was a wonderful moment of arriving when the light appeared to be entering the forest. The air was fresh, cold and crisp. I hadn't noticed at first as we were looking out at the panoramic view and fresh dusting of snow at the top of the escarpment. Just a few feet away, I turned to continue along the path back into the woods and witnessed this view. It was an awesome gift to see the light streaming through.Equipment
At the time, I had a Canon G12 camera, hand-held. I like to hike/walk light.Inspiration
It's beauty inspired me and the unexpected moment. This is it... being there and able to share with photography, no matter how modest our tools and experience.Editing
I post-processed in photoshop. The photo was shot raw so I was able adjust the shadows and light and work with layers to enrich the colour and depth. Often I am unaware of the process to better articulate what photoshop is for me... it is like a painting tool and I layer multiple times to see the effects as well as compare the changes from the raw image. It is a developing tool and I enjoy the creative play.In my camera bag
I don't carry an equipment bag per se... just the camera tucked into my vest with a few pairs of reading glasses. Keeping it simple and how to develop that theme with the development as a photographer peeks my interest in the new and innovative full-frame compact digital cameras on the market. At present, I use a FinePix X100.Feedback
If you like to hike and walk unencumbered with equipment and the weather is not a problem...then a good compact camera with raw capabilities (weather-proof or w/ a portable rain jacket) will give you the freedom to move about. I am not a professional photographer and so my advice is to encourage the experience both outdoors and with post-processing as a way of developing your photos and experience. I have trained myself over the years to use photoshop and that in itself was/is fun to learn. There are multiple apps and softwares that one can choose and learn from. It is exhilarating and creative to be both a part of the natural world and technology that helps us to visually communicate our experiences! Thanks ViewBug and community for the opportunity to share, the fun, and encouragement offered.
