This shot was captured in some public gardens. It was a lovely warm day and I had spent age watch the insects moving around the flowers. I was actually trying to capture a macro of the stamen when I noticed this been climbing up it. I made the bee my focal point and shot a few shots of it moving up. I was really pleased when it peaked over the top as that made for a brilliant composition!Time
I captured this on 12th July 2016 at 11:36. I had spent the whole morning wandering around the gardens as it was a hot summers day. This meant the the insect were particularly active and very fast moving!Lighting
As it was bright, sunny day I had to use a fast shutter speed to prevent glare from the flowers. This was handy though as the insects were moving very quickly. I also used a macro ring flash to try to reduce the shadows and increase the light inside the flower.Equipment
I have a canon eos 70d and used my EF 100mm f/2.8 macro USM lens. I had the camera mounted on a tripod and attached a ring flash to the lens.Inspiration
The gardens are one of my favourite places to visit. I wanted to capture some of the colourful flowers that day, but was also hoping there would be plenty of insects to photograph while I was there. I can always find something inspiring to capture when I visit these gardens.Editing
I cropped the image to make the bee more of a feature. I shoot in RAW so I adjusted levels and contrast. In my camera bag
I love macro photography so my macro lens is usually with me. I also love other forms of nature and wildlife so take out my Canon75-300mm lens.Feedback
This sort of shot takes a lot of luck and patience. I spent ages pointing my camera at one spot on the flower. On a hot day and insect will eventually land on the flower to gather pollen. Cooler parts of the day in the summer will make it easier to capture insects as they are more docile - so if you can get out early morning or evening you will probably have more luck!
