Behind The Lens

Location

On a boat cruise on Milford Sound, New Zealand.

Time

Mid-afternoon.

Lighting

The day was overcast, so colours were subdued, but the soft light permitted plenty of texture to come through in the sky and landscape.

Equipment

A Nikon D7000. For this shot the zoom setting was 35mm, ISO 100, F5 and shutter 1/25 sec.

Inspiration

Bowen Falls was in full swing this day due to recent rain. The sheer rock walls in Fiordland become massive water walls during and immediately following heavy rain. The scale of the landscape was inspiration enough, but the power of the water crashing down really made it something.

Editing

RAW processing to bring out texture and colouring.

In my camera bag

I love the mountains, so as little as possible - at present a Nikon D750 camera body, a Nikkor 24-120 small zoom and the 55-300 bigger zoom, a spare battery and beaten up lightweight tripod - good for hiking. If I'm going for a summit then it's even less - a compact Nikon P7800 with mirrorless through the lens digital view finder, full manual operation and RAW file capture - absolutely great when you still want to control your photography but need to keep moving and can't afford to have stuff hanging off you.

Feedback

Shoot in Camera RAW. On dull days like this, post processing can set free the full potential of this kind of scene.
