Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Giulia's house, it was the first time we met each other but it was instant chemistry, things flow easily she was ahppy and comfortable with the service and each photo was better that the last one.

Time

It was around 7 pm, the sun was still a litlle high but entering in a nice way from the big window in front of her bed, it was a very hot summer day, as usual in Sardinia

Lighting

Although we have the light entering from the window, I had to wait to the right moment, cause it was a hot day and we kept the window open to have some air, but her curtains we're quite thick and with a reddish/purple colour, so the best momento to shoot was when the wind moved the curtains away to avoid the reddish tones. To have a little more light specially on face/hair and create more contrast on the white shirt I used a couple of old Courtenay solaflash 1000, although them are probably older than a me, are still reliable

Equipment

this one was shot with a Canon 5D mk II and a canon 28-135, handheld, with a couple of Courtenay Solaflash 1000 with umbrellas (yep they are still rolling!)

Inspiration

Giulia was the ispiration for it, she is a fierce woman with a femminity that stands out, she inspires power and sensuality at the same time, I think that combined with my white man shirt will make the photo speak for itself

Editing

Yes I did, it's quite obvious the vignetting, I must say I almost never use it but I think it can work with this photo, combined with some dodge and burning to enhance the already present contrast of light and shadows, specially on the white shirt

In my camera bag

I still can't afford to have a lot of equipment or prime lenses, so I just try to do my best with an used Canon 5D mark II, an EF 28-135 that came with my old Canon 40D and of course you have to have the cheap but with great results 50 mm! If I'm shooitng indoors I take these old studio llights (also bought used and cheap) and at least a couple of umbrellas and one flash with a remote trigger

Feedback

I just can say, yes you can have a beautiful model in front of you, or you can have a regular model in front of you, but at the end of the day, what helps a lot to do the photo is the relationship that you can establish model/photographer, if both of you are enjoying the photosession the photographs won't lie about it, and things will start flowing by themselves
