Behind The Lens

Location

This is North Peak in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in California.

Time

The image was made at sunrise.

Lighting

The upper mountain was just coming into the sun as I made the exposure.

Equipment

This image was made on TMAX 100 film. The camera was a Tachihara 4x5 with a Schneider 90mm lens. I also used a red filter to give it more contrast. The exposure time was 2 seconds and aperture was f45.

Inspiration

This is one of my most favorite areas in the Sierras, it's surrounded by beautiful shallow lakes and is a short 2 mile hike from the car.

Editing

I scanned the black and white negative and did a bit of dodging and burning.

In my camera bag

When I go out into the backcountry with my film camera I take the 4x5 field camera body and two lenses, a 210mm and a 90mm. I generally bring about 5-8 film holders. As well as a sturdy tripod.

Feedback

Scope out your image the evening before and get up before sunrise so you can set up and make the exposures during the early light.
