Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in The Khajuraho Group of Monuments. A group of Hindu and Jain temples in Madhya Pradesh, India.

Time

This image was the summit of a long day under the Sun. When I arrived in Khajuraho, I found my self staring at carvings of gods, goddesses, warriors and even animals. Although I knew what to expect, I was still taken aback with the erotic nature of the carvings and how explicit they were. I had not been able to take one good shot. As I was leaving around 8:00 pm I just had to take another look at those impressive temples and fell in love with the beautiful silhouettes the trees and the main temple formed against the sun.

Lighting

The sun setting behind the temples was exquisite. I decided to take a doble exposure shot to emphasize the golden hue it gave to the sky and at the same time accentuate the tree silhouettes.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D7100, with a 18-105mm. Details: 58 mm, 1/1000 sec, f/9

Inspiration

I enjoy getting creative when it comes to multiple exposures. On my trip to India, I had focused on two and three shot multiple exposures. Every chance I could, I would set my camera and try the technique. I had made most of my shots around mid-day when dark vs bright is most pronounced. However, the light and the textures during sunset were so hypnotizing that I just could not resist giving it a try.

Editing

The double exposure was taken in camera. I did very little post processing. Mainly some curves to brighten the background and enhance the tree branches in the second shot.

In my camera bag

Since this shot, I have moved to a full frame camera. Today the first thing I pack is my Nikon D750 body, a 50mm f/2.8, my 24-70mm f/2.8 and my 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6.

Feedback

Double exposures are all about contrast. Enable the multiple exposure option in your camera. First shoot the silhouette against a lit background (the temple) and then find a texture (the trees) for the second shot. Compose your image and your camera will automatically merge the two shots.
